Proprioception, Constant Improvement, and the K1 Performance Mindset

In the world of high performance—whether in sport, business, or personal development—the ability to make continuous adjustments and refinements is what separates the elite from the average. This process of constant self-correction and adaptation is deeply linked to a concept known as proprioception—our body’s ability to sense its position, movement, and balance without relying solely on visual input.

At K1 Performance, we focus on marginal gains and relentless self-improvement. Whether it’s refining physical performance, optimising business decisions, or enhancing mindset, the principles of proprioception can serve as a powerful analogy for how we navigate growth, learning, and success.

What is Proprioception?
Proprioception is often called the “sixth sense.” It’s what allows us to move fluidly, adjust our posture, and maintain balance without consciously thinking about it. It’s the reason you can touch your nose with your eyes closed or react instinctively to regain balance when you stumble.

On a deeper level, proprioception is the brain’s way of constantly gathering feedback from the body and adjusting accordingly. This subconscious process is essential for athletes, as it enables rapid adaptation to unpredictable environments. A footballer making a split-second turn, a gymnast landing a routine, or a boxer slipping a punch—all of these movements rely on finely tuned proprioceptive skills.

But this concept extends beyond physical movement. It’s also a mental model for success.

The Proprioceptive Mindset in Business and Performance

The best organisations and individuals operate with a form of corporate proprioception—an ability to sense, assess, and adapt in real time. Businesses that lack this self-awareness operate in a rigid, reactionary mode, making changes only when forced to. In contrast, elite performers—whether in sport or business—embrace continuous micro-adjustments to stay ahead.

Research from Frontiers in Human Neuroscience highlights that proprioceptive training enhances motor function by improving feedback loops and refining movement patterns. This same concept applies to leadership, strategy, and personal growth.

In business, proprioception manifests as:
• Rapid decision-making based on real-time data
• Constant feedback loops for refining strategies
• An intuitive sense of market shifts before they fully emerge
• The ability to pivot without losing momentum

At K1 Performance, we push this concept further—encouraging individuals to develop a heightened awareness of their strengths, weaknesses, and areas for refinement. Just as an elite athlete fine-tunes their balance, strength, and coordination, high-performing individuals and teams must fine-tune their approach to execution, resilience, and leadership.

My Personal Journey: Learning to Move Again

This concept resonates with me on a deeper level. After struggling with injuries and setbacks, I’ve had to relearn how to move, run, and perform at my best. Proprioception isn’t just theoretical for me—it’s something I’ve had to rebuild from the ground up. I’m only at the very beginning of this journey and it’s definitely an interesting one to take.

There’s nothing more frustrating than feeling disconnected from your own movement. After injuries, I realised that my body had lost its natural sense of positioning. Simple movements felt foreign, and regaining fluidity required intentional work. I had to retrain my brain-body connection, much like an organisation needs to retrain its operational awareness after problems or stalling.

Through targeted proprioceptive training, I started to regain confidence in my movement. Today, I did my first Hyrox class back in the gym. I was so nervous and I just needed to get it done. Char helped as always, as did the lads and of course Sheena, pushing me to get it done.

The lesson? Rebuilding movement patterns is no different from refining business performance or leadership skills—it takes: Patience (small, incremental changes compound over time)
• Consistency (the brain needs repetition to rewire itself)
• Adaptability (every setback requires recalibration, not frustration)

At K1 Performance, we integrate this feedback-driven approach into everything we do. Whether it’s coaching executives, training athletes, or optimising personal performance, the key is to:
• Build self-awareness—Know your strengths, weaknesses, and blind spots
• Develop rapid feedback loops—Constantly adjust based on new data
• Embrace marginal gains—Small daily improvements lead to exponential results. Don’t always look at the end.

Elite performance isn’t about massive breakthroughs—it’s about staying tuned in, making continuous refinements, and trusting the process. Just as the body fine-tunes its proprioceptive system through constant input, high performers in business and sport must fine-tune their strategies, behaviours, and mindset.

Whether you’re a CEO, RVP, AVP, sales leader, an athlete, or someone rebuilding after setbacks, proprioception teaches us one of the most fundamental truths about growth:

Mastery isn’t about making one big move—it’s about making a thousand micro-adjustments.

Stay aware. Stay adaptable. Keep improving.
